The Five Stages of AI Denial
1. Denial → Dismissal "It's just a fad."
The comfort of assuming AI is overhyped, like Google Glass or the Metaverse. They compare ChatGPT to Clippy and convince themselves it'll blow over. Meanwhile, their competitors are quietly eliminating 40% of their operational friction.
2. Anger → Demonization "It's going to destroy everything."
Fear flips to hostility. AI becomes the villain, job killer, creativity thief, humanity's downfall. This stage feels righteous but is really just a dressed-up version of paralysis. They spend energy fighting the wave instead of learning to surf.
3. Bargaining → Deflection "It'll never do what I do."
The belief that their particular skill, creativity, or "human touch" is irreplaceable. They negotiate with reality, clinging to the myth that AI can only handle "simple tasks" while ignoring that it's already writing legal briefs, diagnosing conditions, and composing music. They mistake familiarity with their job for immunity from disruption.
4. Depression → Delay "I'll figure it out later."
